Filmmaking Challenge
Now in its fourth year, Folkestone Documentary Festival Filmmaking Challenge is a county-wide creative programme that encourages people across Kent to make short, accessible documentary films rooted in their local environment, communities and stories. The Filmmaking Challenge is delivered in partnership with Screen South and Klip Films.
The Challenge is open to filmmakers of all ages and backgrounds, including schools, colleges, community groups and all aspiring filmmakers. Films must be documentary in form, no longer than five minutes, and made by Kent-based people about Kent-based stories. There are very few rules, you can shoot on any camera, and participants are encouraged to film on their phones to keep the process simple and inclusive. There are two prizes – one for Best Film and one for Best Environmental Film.
This year’s Filmmaking Challenge will be launched at Doc Club on Wednesday 27 May. The closing date for applications is Monday 21 September.
Over the summer, the team will deliver a programme of free, welcoming workshops focused on storytelling rather than technical expertise. These will include an introductory drop-in session covering key elements of documentary filmmaking, a workshop on filming with a smartphone, an informal panel discussion with experienced documentary filmmakers, and a final open advice session near the submission deadline. The emphasis is on confidence, curiosity and creative expression rather than slick production values.
Ten shortlisted films will be screened on the big screen at Folkestone Quarterhouse as part of the festival, followed by an informal networking brunch to celebrate participation and bring people together. With permission, all submitted films will be shared online after the festival via the Screen South YouTube channel, and a follow-up discussion session will enable participants to reflect, learn from each other and build confidence.
The project offers development support rather than cash prizes, including mentoring, equipment access and progression opportunities. The Filmmaking Challenge has grown from a small passion project into Folkestone Documentary Festival’s main outreach programme.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Are the End Credits counted as part of the 5 min duration?
A: No, the maximum duration of the “story” must be under 5 minutes. The End Credits are allowed to run for 30 seconds on top of the 5 minutes. Please note that any Start Credits are included in the 5 minutes.
Q: What music can I use?
A: You can use composed music, but you must have written permission from the composer to use their music. If music has been released by a record label, it is often very difficult to obtain the rights, and it will most likely be expensive. We suggest teaming up with a composer or musician, or using free library music, which you may be able to find online, but make sure to check the terms of use very carefully.
Q: Can I use archive material that I have shot before the competition’s timescale?
A: You are allowed to use a reasonable amount of archive pictures and footage so long as you own the rights to use them, and it is clear that the documentary at large was made during the challenge timescale.
Q: Do I need to be a professional filmmaker to take part?
A: No, the Filmmaking Challenge is open to both professional and non-professional filmmakers, and we welcome a range of stories, experiences and abilities.
